Day 16: Baltimore

By the time I returned to my Maryland travels, I was facing the last day of summer. There were (and remain) a number of things to visit on my list for the state, much of which will fill in gaps created by Covid closures. I had avoided Baltimore trips throughout the summer because I was avoiding crowds, but the last day of the season was gorgeous, so I decided to close my Maryland adventures there.

My first stop was Fort McHenry, the site where the US flag’s broad stripes and broad stars were gallantly streaming following sustained British attack, according to Francis Scott Key. The historic portions of the site were closed because of the pandemic, but the walking path around the fort was open and the weather was glorious. In normal times, I would like to take a water taxi to the fort from Inner Harbor and now I know where it will drop me. Instead, I drove around the surrounding neighborhood, but decided not to stop at any of the bars or cafes.

Instead, I went to explore Sagamore Spirit Distillery. Maryland has a history of producing rye, which uses a process similar to that of bourbon but with a much more sour taste. I hoped to tour the distillery, but spots were limited to accommodate social distancing and they were sold out for the day. Instead, I went to the bar and ordered a rye-based Old Fashioned and a snack. The drink was strong, so I lingered for awhile at the harbor before getting behind the wheel of my car.

I drove to Fell’s Point, a storied neighborhood along harbor known for its ties to shipbuilding. It was charming and I took another walk along the waterfront on the glorious day, soaking in the historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and many options for eating and drinking. As it turned toward evening, I decided not to sit down for a full meal. Instead, I picked up a candied apple and headed for home.

Maryland had been a wonderful state, particularly during a pandemic. I was able to explore its many beautiful regions and learn a lot about a state I had mostly just passed through before. And I have a list of exciting things to visit nearby once it is safe to do so. 2020 did not get in my way.
